With Denny Wright on bass and Doug Ackerman on drums the J.J. Vicars Trio perform an evening of Blues, Boogie & Rock 'n' Roll at a very unique location, one whose idea we hope to see spread in popularity. From their website;

The idea for the First Amendment Public House was born of the belief that any problem can be solved using civil discussion and education.  Family owned and operated and located in historic downtown Wooster, 1A is home to monthly debates as well as the best burger in town and an ever-changing selection of craft beers.

While the country struggles to find a balance between freedom-to and freedom-from, we exist to provide a stage for the lost art of democratic argument.   Democracy flourishes when civil debate is used to solve social issues.  Welcome to The First Amendment Public House, where we can agree to disagree and still enjoy a beer together.

From the FCCJ entertainment committee;

"It is a rare treat for SNL to host an up-and-coming entertainer who just happens to be passing through town. Tara Tinsley is a singer-songwriter who has been compared to artists like Jewel and Jack Johnson while maintaining a fresh, unique sound. Originally from Michigan, Tara is now based in California's Central Valley. Some of her 300 songs are recorded on three albums: Come and Go, Sail Away, and Beautiful Day. (They can all be sampled on Tara's web site: www.taratinsley.com.)

Tara has been opening for a range of established and alternative pop-rock bands in major venues such as the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan, the Modesto Centre Plaza in Modesto, California and the Angels Stadium in Anaheim, California. So before she hits the big time, don't miss this chance to hear her in the cozy atmosphere of the FCCJ's main bar.

Accompanying Tara on guitar will be longtime FCCJ favorite and local fixture J.J. Vicars."

The Under Achievers return to the scene of the crime for another evening of lazy backporch pickin' up at the Press Club. From the press release;

The Under Achievers are an acoustic trio featuring Reverend Double J Vicars on guitar/vocals with Hugh Ashton on Dobro and Hisa Nakase on bass. Together they perform an eclectic mix of Country, Western Swing, Blues and
Americana.

The group came together when following the March 11th earthquake and tsunami, J.J. wrote a Surf instrumental called "MELTDOWN" to help raise money for the Tohoku relief effort. Hugh was one of the first musicians to contribute a track playing the lap steel guitar, which ended up on the Dance remix. "MELTDOWN," released under the band name Premature Evacuation, is available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/prematureevacuatio and all proceeds go to the disaster relief effort. Meanwhile, J.J. and Hugh started getting together for gigs as The Urban Achievers.

A press club favorite from way back and an ordained minister with the Church of the Latter Day Dude, J.J. has played in a variety of groups both here in Japan and back in the States. During his ongoing residence in Tokyohe has released four solo albums, all available at http://www.cdbaby.com/all/jjvicars.) He has six more albums on the way.

Hugh Ashton, despite being British, plays the Dobro in a self-taught, vaguely country style. While still in the UK, he played bass and keyboards in a number of New Wave bands. Since coming to Japan, he has taken up pickin' and slidin'. He has also written three self-published novels of alternative history fiction and had a surprise hit with a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories. http://beneathgrayski.es/

Hisa Nakase, whom many SNL regulars will remember regularly backs up Steve Gardner weilds a po' boy cap and a doghoyse bass. The Under Achievers are just the thing for kickin' back and takin' it easy in the over achieveing urbanopolis of Tokyo.

"And yea, it came to pass that the band of wise musicians descended upon the venue known as Crawfish and delivered a rocketing barrage of major tuneage upon a motley group of ne'er-do-wells, drunkards and other miscreants. And when they heard the bad-ass sounds, they bestowed plaudits on the band and repented of their sins."

Mobara, Chiba 297-0012.
Jap
0475-26-5755 [map]
Price: ¥1500 (inlcudes 1 drink coupon)

Starts at 6:00 pm with the Fabulous Boso Boys performing at 8:30pm

Unequivocally the coolest place in Chiba! The West End Saloon is a real Texas style Road House bar & restaurant transplanted in Mobara, Chiba. Looking like some honky-tonk off of IH-35 near Austin, the all-wood building was designed and hand built by the owner, who spent months of research in the U.S. on western style bars and buildings. He has filled the interior with cool antiques and memorabilia, including plenty of Stevie Ray Vaughn concert posters. With rows of Jack Daniels bottles behind the bar and a nice stage with guitars hanging on the wall, the place was specifically designed for some serious live rockin' music performances. The owner himself plays guitar with his own house band.

The August "West-Stock" Festival is one of those rare events, with over six different bands performing.  Our reputation preceding us, the management kindly slipped us in at the prime 8:30pm slot for a full-band electric performance. As a bonus, the West End undoubtedly serves up one of the best cheeseburgers to be found in Japan. The rest of the menu is completely in Japanese, so find a picture and point something out!   However, finding the place is truly a challenge as the West End is tucked out on the edge of town, hidden in some trees off a small back road. Plenty of parking once you find it, and the nearest station is Mobara, a moderate taxi ride away.

Price: ¥500

2nd Floor above the BOND SURF shop next to the GUSTO restaurant on Route 128, Ichinomiya, by Taito Fishing Port. Starts at 6:00pm with the Fabulous Boso Boys performing after 8:00pm

Namioto is a pocket sized bar and cafe located above the Bond Surf shop on Route 128 near Ichinomiya and Misaki, overlooking Taito Beach.  It truly has a stunning view of the waves rolling up, and is filled with cool surfboard decor.  Chika-san, the bar master, heard the Boso Boys playing at Taito beach on August 14th, and specifically requested us to come and play at her place.  The "Hot Summer Party" seems to be a goodbye to Summer event with two or three other small groups performing.  Hearing we were available, Chika is placing us in the prime timeslot. Since the place is closet sized, the Boso Boys will be going acoustic for this intimate event, however that won't dampen the energy one little bit! Hopefully the belly dancers from the last party will show up again!

A friendly get together out on the Chiba peninsula for some pizza, oat soda, and smokin' music. Singer/guitarist Roger Sherrin hosts a laidback show featuring guitarist Shinjiro Mori during the second set and Rev. JJV during the third along with a few other fine pickers. If the music flows as good as the beer it may open up into a late-night jam session. If you're a Tokyo resident who needs a break from the grind book a room at http://www.wavehuntersjapan.com/ and head down where you can take 'er easy and just go with the flow.
