The Under Achievers return to the scene of the crime for another evening of lazy backporch pickin' up at the Press Club. From the press release;
The Under Achievers are an acoustic trio featuring Reverend Double J Vicars on guitar/vocals with Hugh Ashton on Dobro and Hisa Nakase on bass. Together they perform an eclectic mix of Country, Western Swing, Blues and Americana.
The group came together when following the March 11th earthquake and tsunami, J.J. wrote a Surf instrumental called "MELTDOWN" to help raise money for the Tohoku relief effort. Hugh was one of the first musicians to contribute a track playing the lap steel guitar, which ended up on the Dance remix. "MELTDOWN," released under the band name Premature Evacuation, is available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/prematureevacuatio and all proceeds go to the disaster relief effort. Meanwhile, J.J. and Hugh started getting together for gigs as The Urban Achievers.
A press club favorite from way back and an ordained minister with the Church of the Latter Day Dude, J.J. has played in a variety of groups both here in Japan and back in the States. During his ongoing residence in Tokyohe has released four solo albums, all available at http://www.cdbaby.com/all/jjvicars.) He has six more albums on the way.
Hugh Ashton, despite being British, plays the Dobro in a self-taught, vaguely country style. While still in the UK, he played bass and keyboards in a number of New Wave bands. Since coming to Japan, he has taken up pickin' and slidin'. He has also written three self-published novels of alternative history fiction and had a surprise hit with a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories. http://beneathgrayski.es/
Hisa Nakase, whom many SNL regulars will remember regularly backs up Steve Gardner weilds a po' boy cap and a doghoyse bass. The Under Achievers are just the thing for kickin' back and takin' it easy in the over achieveing urbanopolis of Tokyo.
